Today at the vet's office she was purring so loud the doctor couldn't hear her heartbeat so she had to briefly cover her nose to stop the purring.

Font - of RezraRoze OP. 5d The vet only did it in 2 second bursts. And once the vet could listen to her heart, my cat went back to purring and wanting to be pet by her lol. She's an older cat and it's important that the vet is able to take accurate vitals. Edit: Just to save everyone the trouble, yes I'm aware cats purr to self-soothe and it doesn't always mean they're happy. I've had my cat for a long time and understand her well. She is just a happy cat and has always purred loudly. Nonetheles

Rectangle - zedispain 5d I've asked the top comment but do you have any tips on how to raise kitties to be cool with vets and car rides in a carrier? I've always have had troubles with them getting super scared.

Rectangle - RezraRoze OP. 5d I think it's largely dependent on the cat's personality and also whether they had any traumatic events during their kitten years. For instance, a vet may cut their nails too short as a young cat and that is the onset of their fear. I have another cat that is very fearful and scared of the vet. To help him:

Font - 1. I give him his favorite treats when he's in the carrier to help him associate it with good things. 2. I also cover the carrier while continuously talking to him. I feel like hearing his human-mom's voice while also being covered, helps a bit because he' tends to go under blankets to relax/sleep. 3. I make the car ride steady and quiet if I can. 4. I make appointments for early in the morning on a week day If possible so there are less animals, people and noises. 5. I use a calming spra

Rectangle - squishpitcher 5d Even my dude who also purred and had to have his nose covered for a second to get a heartbeat when he was a kitten did not care for the rectal thermometer. He was like, "Excuse me, I thought we were friends!"

Smile - InexplicableMagic 5d I had the same thing happen to my cat! He was purring so much they couldn't hear a thing, so they decided to check his temperature, rectally. No change in his breathing patterns In the end their conclusion was: "There's a nice echo in his chest!" And that was that!

Rectangle - dryfire 5d My cat had the same "problem". Tip for your vet next time, my vets solution: "well, we need to take his temp anyway... Any this usually works" stuck the thermometer where the sun don't shine, purring stopped, got the temp and heartbeat all at once.

Rectangle - JudgiestJudy 5d My family used to have a cat that was like this. Always purred at the vet, loved meeting new people and would run up to them immediately for attention and belly rubs. He converted several friends of mine from being cat-indifferent to cat lovers, yet was also being one of the worst-behaved pets we ever had. I miss that little jerk

Rectangle - Fallilling 5d One of my cats is a giant purr baby, and the vet had the same issue one time. She literally asked, "how do you turn off his motor?" Lol. She ended turning on the sink facet and holding him close to the running water. That worked long enough for to get a listen to his heart before he started up again.

Rectangle - kobuta99 5d Guess all the vets have their own methods. My vet used to turn on the faucet for my very anxious kitty, and he would stop purring right away and stare at the water in horror. Purrs back up minute later.

Rectangle - stillnotalexa 5d That reminds me of my most resplendent doofus, Pickle. (Yes, he was an orange cat). Not only did the nurses struggle getting his pulse, but the rumbles amused the ultrasound tech.

Rectangle - fooliam 5d My cat is the same. He absolutely loves people, is completely OK with whatever you want to do with him so long as he gets attention, and it's been a problem at the vet with him purring so much and just wanting to cuddle with the vet techs that they struggle to actually get the info they need. I love that little fuzzball
